আমি শাহানা হানিফ। আমার জন্ম ব্রুকলিনে। কাজ করি একজন সংগঠক, ও নারী অধিকার কর্মী হিসেবে। নিউ ইয়র্ক সিটির সবচেয়ে বড় বাংলাদেশী মুসলিম কমুনিটিগুলোর মধ্যে একটি, এই কেনসিংটনে আমার বেড়ে ওঠা।
এই ভিডিওটি বাংলায় করা হয়েছে, কারণ আমি মনে করি, আমাদের এই কমিউনিটিতে এবং পুরো যুক্তরাষ্ট্রেও সমস্যাগ্রস্ত এমন অনেক বাবা-মা আছেন এবং এমন অনেক পরিবার আছেন, আমার এই কথাগুলো তাদের বোঝা দরকার।
২০১৬ সালে ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প আমেরিকার প্রেসিডেন্ট হিসাবে নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন। তিনি ক্ষমতায় আসার পর থেকেই আমাদের কমিউনিটির লোকজনের নাগরিক অধিকারগুলো সীমিত হতে থাকে। আমাদের কাছের অনেককে আটক করা হয়েছে। কাউকে কাউকে জোর করে দেশে ফেরত পাঠিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে। কেউ কেউ নিজের পরিবারের সদস্যদের সাথে মিলিত হবার অপেক্ষায় আছেন। আবার অনেকেই নাগরিকত্ব পাওয়ার অপেক্ষায় আছেন।
আমাদের পরিচিত অনেকেই খুব করুন অবস্থায় দিনযাপন করছেন। কারণ, তাদের জন্য স্বাস্থ্যসেবার কোনও সুবিধা নেই। অনেকের শিক্ষা-ঋণের বোঝা আছে। কোন সঞ্চয় এর পথ নেই অনেকের। স্বল্প আয়ের কাজ করেন তারা। আমি এমন পরিস্থিতি দেখেছি এই ব্রুকলিনে, নিউ ইয়র্ক সিটিজুড়ে।
এতো খারাপ পরিস্থিতিতেও, আমরা আমাদের সমাজে ন্যায্য বিচার ব্যবস্থা গড়ার রাস্তা থেকে সরে যাইনি। যেমন ধরুন, জ্যামাইকাতে আমরা বাংলাদেশী ভাড়াটিয়াদের ইউনিয়ন প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেছি। ভোটে জবাব দেয়ার জন্যও আমরা নিজেদের সংগঠিত করছি। ভয় জাগানো ট্রাম্প প্রশাসনের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিরোধ গড়ে তুলতে বাংলাদেশী আমেরিকানস ফর পলিটিক্যাল প্রগ্রেস নামে একটা সংগঠন গড়ে তুলেছি।
২০২০ সালের নির্বাচনে আমাদের সামনে বড় একটা সুযোগ। চাইলে আমরা এমন একজন নেতা নির্বাচিত করতে পারি, যিনি চরম বিপদগ্রস্থ আমাদের এই কমিউনিটিকে রক্ষা করতে পারবেন। আমি এ জন্যে, বার্নি স্যান্ডার্সকে সমর্থন দিচ্ছি।
বার্নি স্যান্ডার্স সব ধরণের মানুষের মর্যাদায় বিশ্বাস করেন। শ্রমজীবী, অভিবাসী শ্রেণীর জীবন মানোন্নয়নের জন্য সারাদেশে নিয়মিত কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন তিনি। বার্নি স্যান্ডার্স হচ্ছেন একমাত্র প্রেসিডেন্ট প্রার্থী যিনি সবার জন্য স্বাস্থ্যসেবা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য লড়াই করছেন। পরিবেশগত বিপর্যয় ঠেকাতে গ্রিন নিউ ডিল নামে নতুন একটা আইন পাশের চেষ্টা করছেন। শিক্ষা ঋণের বোঝা বাতিলের চেষ্টা করেছেন। সবার জন্য একটা নিরাপদ, মানসম্মত এবং সাশ্রয়ী বসবাসের জায়গা নিশ্চিত করতেও লড়াই করে যাচ্ছেন বার্নি স্যান্ডার্স।

I’m Shahana Hanif, a daughter, organizer, and feminist from Brooklyn! I was born and raised in Kensington, which is among the largest Bangladeshi Muslim communities in New York City.
This video is in Bangla because our mothers, fathers, Bangla-fluent family members deserve to understand my message because a lot is at stake with our communities and our country.
In 2016, Trump was elected. And since taking power, our communities have been under attack through major rollbacks in civil rights. Many close to us have been detained and deported, many are waiting to be reunited with their family members, many are waiting to obtain citizenship.
Many close to us are living in unlivable conditions without healthcare access, with the burdens of student-debt, no savings, and working low-wage jobs. I have seen all of these in Brooklyn and across this city.
And despite these times, we have not stopped organizing on the ground, like with the creation of the Bangladeshi Tenants Union in Jamaica, Queens. And we’ve not stopped organizing electorally, like with the creation of Bangladeshi Americans for Political Progress, to resist this fear-mongering administration.
2020 is our chance to elect leadership that protects our most vulnerable communities. I support Bernie Sanders for President.
Bernie Sanders believes in the dignity of all people, and has consistently worked toward uplifting working-class, immigrant communities across this country. Bernie Sanders is the only presidential candidate who is fighting for Medicare For All, pushing for a Green New Deal on the scale of the crisis, working to cancel ALL student debt, and fighting to guarantee that everyone has a safe, sustainable, and truly affordable home.
